Europe

What can I expect from Europe?

Escape with Absolutely Lucy on a European adventure. Whether its a weekend city break, a long summer holiday or perhaps even an epic road trip or Interrail. I’ve got it all in this section, including:

Get off the beaten track in Slovenia, or explore alpine lakes in Austria and Switzerland. Get away from the crowds and visit Liechtenstein and tick off the 6th smallest country in the world. Summer holiday in Malta, Greece, Italy or Portugal and top up that tan. Or head to Ibiza with your gals for a messy one!

You guys will know that I’m a bit of a festival queen and in this section you can find posts on music festivals I’ve attended across Europe. Two of my favourites were:

I went to Garorock Festival last summer with Ryanair for a week of 30+ degree heat, staying in a gorgeous country house and seeing epic acts like Macklemore and Sum 41 play the main stages. Hideout Festival was one of my first ever festivals abroad – I gathered a group of my mates and we headed to Croatia for 10 days of sunshine and house music on the beach.

Typical Costs When Travelling

Accommodation – Costs can really vary across Europe and it’s a good idea to bear this in mind when planning your travels. If you’re on more of a budget, look at countries in Eastern Europe and plan a city break in Budapest or Bucharest. Staying in hostels or finding a cheap Airbnb is the best way to go for cheaper accommodation. Or, if you’ve got more money to spare, why not book into a quirky boutique hotel? You can expect to pay around £10-20 per night at a hostel depending on where you go, while hotels could start from £40 a night.

Food – You can eat super cheaply across Europe if you avoid the tourist traps and instead wander the backstreets or follow the locals. Don’t go to the busiest areas, instead find independently owned restaurants or even delis. If you’re on a budget, check out the local markets for cheap eats and great stuff to take home and cook with.

Transportation – Always look online before you visit a city and see if they have a weekend tourist pass for the city. This often will give you cheaper travel on public transport and maybe discounts for attractions. Another great option is just to walk/cycle – not only does it save you money, but many European cities have gorgeous outdoor spaces and parks. Or, why not hire a van and drive – a road trip is always a great option!

Suggested daily budget – 50-100 GBP / 60-120 USD (Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a hostel, eating out a little, cooking most of your meals, and using local transportation. Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!)

Money Saving Tips

1
Visit the museums Lots of places in Europe have amazing museums and historical sights. Often these are free unless you wish to have a full tour so make the most of them!
2
Get an Interrail pass If you're planning on a summer trip to multiple cities/countries – check out interrail passes and see if there is one that works for you. You could save a lot of money.
3
Road trip and camp Europe has amazing countryside and there are so many epic road trips you can do. Why not pack up a car/van and camp out by a lake and mountains?
4
Couchsurf or house-sit If costs are mounting – why not look into Couchsurfing or options for house-sitting? It could help save you a lot of money on accommodation and you may find a friend/guide!
