Road-tripping around Austria and Switzerland will always be one of my travel highlights. Those crystal clear alpine lakes, incredible mountain views and castles hidden in the valleys. Converting a van into a camper was one of the best travel decisions ever. I loved having the opportunity to really explore these countries beyond the cities.
Road tripping across Austria
We started in Vienna, a city which is absolutely beautiful. Well worth a visit for the incredible architecture and riverside bars. We spent around a day there and found it was enough to see everything we wanted to see.
Then driving towards the south and camping overnight at lakes overlooked by mountains. Before driving to Salzburg for a quick visit and look around the palace which was lovely. Austria is definitely a country I would like to spend more time exploring and driving. It would be a perfect place to spend the summer.
Travelling Austria & Switzerland
We later headed into Switzerland, visiting the peak of a mountain on the border of Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein was a highlight, when it was 30 degrees on the ground and there was snow at the top of the mountain! In Switzerland, we spent a day in Zurich, but to be honest I found the city a bit bland and lacking in personality.
We quickly headed on to the real highlight of the trip which was camping at some of the most incredible lakeside campsites I have ever seen. Surrounded by mountains and with the most amazing sunrises and sunsets – this was one of my favourite parts of the whole trip.
And the final stop…
Our final stop in the country was in beautiful little Basel which definitely made up for Zurich. It had all of the Swiss charm I’d been missing in gorgeous architecture and old-fashioned winding streets. It was a fantastic place to spend the afternoon.
