Forget pumpkin patches and pumpkin spice lattes, if you're not ready to say goodbye to sunshine and that feeling of endless summer – this is what you've been looking for. Soon the children will be back at school and order will be restored to European cities and holiday resorts, which makes September to November the perfect time to visit Europe.
If the European trip you've been dreaming of is wandering through Old Towns in search of your next gelato or spritz before a lazy, late dinner that stretches into the night. Perhaps you're longing to stretch your legs and take on some of Europe's more challenging hikes but need the burning summer heat to dissipate before you can bear to pull on your hiking boots. The shoulder season is the perfect time to visit Europe because of a number of reasons – it's cheaper and better value, less busy, more peaceful, cooler temperatures and far less competition for a sun bed.

Everything You Need To Know Before Booking A Trip To Europe
This summer may have had far more of those rainy, grey days than you would like, you may have been clinging on to. promises of that Indian summer being right around the corner. But if you're anything like me, as soon as September rolls around and the mornings and nights start getting darker, you can feel your seasonal affective disorder rolling in.
Why wait on empty promises of a few potentially sunny days when you could pack your bags and catch a cheap flight to Europe where the summer continues long into October these days. The last few years I've booked trips to Europe for late September and October and been amazed by how hot it still was – so what are you waiting for? Here's the answers to some frequently asked questions about travelling during the shoulder season.
> READ: 16 Tips for Finding Cheap Flights for any Destination in 2024
What is shoulder season?
The shoulder season is that beautiful lull between peak season and low season. Imagine the moments when the busy crowds of summer dissipate and the children go back to school. It's the time when you are left with quieter winding streets through old towns in the heart of Europe, emptier beaches and no fight for a sun bed. Often the weather is still incredible during the shoulder season which makes it a great time to travel if you're not restricted by term times.
The shoulder season can last months, or just a few weeks, depending on the region and weather. For Europe, shoulder season is in Spring (usually March, April and May) and Autumn (September, October, November). Some parts of Europe might consider May and September still part of the summer months, and November might be considered winter depending on the climate.
What months do people travel the least?
If you choose to travel during the quieter months, you are far more likely to score a cheaper flight and a less crowded plane and destination. The months when people tend to travel the least include January and February, the beginning of May, later in September and October (avoiding half-term), so these are great times to look for a deal.
Where in Europe is it still warm in September?
If you're planning a trip to Europe in September, you'll find that often most parts of Europe will still have amazing weather but the added bonus of being cheaper and quieter. Looking for warm destinations in Europe during September? It's my favourite time to travel within Europe and some of the best places to visit in Europe in Autumn include:
- Tuscany or Puglia, in Italy
- The Greek Islands
- Malta
- Lisbon, in Portugal
- Albania
Where is hot and cheap in October for sun?
Even in October, you can find places in Europe that reach 24ºC most days and still offer long sunny days. I highly recommend destinations such as Malta or Cyprus which remain some of the hottest destinations, or look at places like Rhodes in Greece (I went end of October last year and it was 30ºC every day!) or try Sicily in Italy. The Canary Islands are always a recommendation for out of season heat in Europe, but don't think they are your only option. There are so many places in October which are hot and cheap for sunshine.
The 11 Best Places To Go In Europe in Autumn
There are so many amazing gems in Europe and it would take me forever to list them all, but if you're looking for the best places to go in Europe in autumn, this list is a great starting point. Enjoy the last warmth of summer but tinged with the seasonal shifts we all love as the leaves change and things start to slow down. Travelling in the shoulder season is so different to peak summer and I can't recommend it enough.
Some of the best places to visit in Europe in autumn include tropical destinations such as the "Hawaii of Europe" Madeira, the microclimate of Seville, everyone's Mamma Mia favourite – the Greek Islands, but don't forget lesser known gems such as Bosnia and Montenegro for amazing hikes and scenery, or Malta for the digital nomads among us. Keep reading for more gems you might not have considered for your autumnal escapes!
1. Madeira, Portugal
Plan a visit to the "Hawaii of Europe" and you can escape into those tropical climates even in the autumn months. Madeira is the perfect destination for September when temperatures still range between 21-26ºC daily, October can also be a great month to travel when the island is quieter. For those with a taste for outdoors and adventure activities or who love hiking, it is the perfect time to visit and to hit the trails before the rainier season hits between October-January. The months between July to October are considered the best time to visit Madeira, so catch the tail-end of the season to benefit from the best weather and a quieter island.

I stayed in the NEXT Savoy Signature hotel when I visited Funchal and it was a perfect base for exploring the island. It has a gorgeous, colourful, art-deco vibe that feels really luxury and the service is faultless. It's a harbour-side property which means it overlooks the ocean with a rooftop bar and swimming pool. There's also swimming pools by the harbour and sea access for a swim.

One of my favourite places in Europe, Montenegro, is such a gem when it comes to travel in Europe. It's one of the best places to visit in Europe in autumn (and all year round!). It's grown hugely in popularity over the last few years, entrancing travellers with its charming old town, sparkling ocean and towering mountains surrounding the Bay of Kotor. Also welcoming cruise ships throughout the summer season, Kotor can get very busy during peak season. However, if you prefer to avoid the crowds, travelling to Montenegro during the shoulder season can be a great way to enjoy Kotor minus the crowds. Temperatures range from 10-26ºC during September, October and November.

Okay, okay I know everyone always talks about Florence but here's how you can score a trip to Tuscany without paying the more expensive prices of travelling to Florence. It's still one of my favourite Autumn trips and a perfect destination for shoulder season, Pisa offers cheap flights, a lively student town with incredible food and amazing rail connections for days out and trips. Temperatures range from 11-26ºC (but when I visited in late October it was 26-30ºC every day!). By planning a trip to Pisa out of season, I also got to visit the Tuscan countryside and vineyards, spent a day in Florence and Siena and still had a relaxing break.

Best places to stay in Pisa:
Picture a beautiful and peaceful studio duplex overlooking gardens filled with lemon and lime trees and a tortoise rustling around the grounds. Located in the heart of the historical centre of Pisa and just 250 yards away from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Owner Elisabetta was thoughtful and welcoming, going above and beyond with fantastic restaurant recommendations, maps, late check-out and luggage storage. I loved staying at Relais Pacinotti Apartments and it was also great to have a self-catering option for when we wanted to prepare a quick lunch at home.

4. Rhodes, Greece
If you're looking for that end of summer sunshine, Rhodes is a perfect choice for the shoulder season. While the hottest temperatures are still lingering, it is also cooler for the adventure activities you have to avoid mid-summer. It's a beautiful Greek island with a charming Old Town, sparkling harbour with lots of fun beach clubs, plus lots of pretty little towns such as Lindos where you can visit the Acropolis, and of course, beaches like St Paul's Bay. Temperatures in Rhodes during September, October and November can range from 13-27ºC – BUT when I visited at the end of October it was 30ºC every day and I never needed a layer at nighttime.

If there's a place to hire a car in Greece, its the island of Rhodes. There is so much to see and explore including remote beaches and the beautiful Old Town, but in order to make the most of it you really need a hire car. You can hire a car in Rhodes from £12 a day – we just hired a car at a nearby office on the days we wanted to explore the island. I really recommend driving over to Lindos and St Paul's Bay which was my favourite part of the island. It's super easy to drive there with wide, quiet roads.
Best places to stay in Rhodes:
I took a risk when I booked our accommodation for a last minute trip to Rhodes at the end of October. I wanted to stay somewhere central on the island to minimise driving times and I decided to go with Faliraki (despite the negative impression I had of the town). It was super quiet when we visited which meant that although yes, the strip was still pumping loud dance music and was tacky as ever, that staying just behind the town meant we chose when we ventured into town. There were also lots of amazing restaurants away from the main strip which meant we could avoid it altogether if we wanted. Malibu Boutique Studios & Bungalows is a relatively new accommodation and comes with a swimming pool and amazing breakfast. It was perfect for our stay and I scored a bargain through Genius rewards on Booking.
- Best Hotel: Malibu Boutique Studios & Bungalows
- Best Hostel: STAY Hostel & Bar Rhodes
Best things to do in Rhodes:
Did you even go to Greece if you didn't go on a boat trip? I had the best day out on the water, jumping off the boat and snorkelling through caves so don't miss booking a day cruise. If you love an active holiday, why not try sea kayaking around the island, or take a jeep tour? There's also an opportunity for a wine tasting and cooking class in a vineyard – heaven!

Travelling to Bosnia & Herzegovina during shoulder season is a MUST! I went during peak summer and it was a whopping 40ºC when I was there. If you love exploring, hiking and getting outdoors, trust me you will really benefit from travelling out of season. It just means making the most of visiting places like Mostar (known as Bosnian California to the locals for the insane temperatures of this micro-climate).

Travelling to Bosnia & Herzegovina
Flights start from just £29 from the UK to Bosnia & Herzegovina, making it one of the cheapest options for Autumn and it's less than three hours away. I recommend flying to Sarajevo as there are more flight options, but with only 8 flights a week, you will be limited to Wizz Air UK and Ryanair.

Best places to stay in Bosnia & Herzegovina:
If you're visiting Sarajevo, here are a few recommendations for hotels and hostels in the city. I'm sensing a theme in my recommendations for accommodation – I love booking apartments when I travel! They just offer so much more space and independence when you travel, plus since I love to eat out, I'd rather save money on breakfast in a hotel. CASA Room Apartments was a great find for a last minute booking. We stayed in two different apartments under the same brand during our trip which were very centrally located, just off the main square. They were reasonably priced, comfortable and spacious, near to a multi-storey car park where we could leave our hire car and of course, lots of great bars and restaurants just a short walk away.
