Solo Female Travel

The UK is a great place to start solo travelling. Remember, you don’t have to hop on a plane to give yourself the solo female travel experience. Travel starts at home, whether you take a day trip to a place you’ve never been before, or you head off in your campervan to explore a new country within the UK. I’ve loved exploring the UK solo, and while I never did it until after my first solo backpacking trip, I think it would be a great way to build your confidence before venturing abroad. Here’s some solo female travel tips to keep you feeling safe and confident:

Trust your gut – my number 1 rule. If something feels off, leave the situation!

Never arrive anywhere late at night, it will instantly feel dodgy.

Research hostels & accommodations – always read the reviews.

If you feel nervous, check in with friends / family nightly and send them your location.

Talk to people! Don’t let yourself feel isolated. Make friends and form a group.

How Much Does It Cost to Travel the UK?

Accommodation

This can be one of your biggest costs when travelling the UK. If you’re on a budget, I recommend looking at hostels or Airbnb for cheaper options. If travelling as a group – look at renting a cottage or house for the week. If you’re visiting a city like London, there are cheaper options for hotels available, check out Point A Hotels budget-friendly option. The UK also has a great selection of campsites available, along with glamping and luxury options including yurts and cabins. Or why not hire a camper van and enjoy the freedom of the open road?

Food

If you have a bigger budget, enjoy dining out at the UK’s best restaurants across cities like London and York. Or, if you’re on a tighter budget – look at street food markets and budget-friendly independent restaurants and chains for great deals on your favourite foods.

Transportation

Get yourself a weekly or weekend travel card if you’re in London – trust me you will use it enough to have saved on travel costs. If you’re travelling outside of London – expect rail prices to be high. Shop around online for deals on prices or consider hiring a car if there’s a few of you. Also, buses are available between cities and can often be a fraction of the price.

50-100 GBP / 60-120 USD (Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a hostel, eating out a little, cooking most of your meals, and using local transportation. Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!)

Cook for yourself

Staying in a hostel can save you a lot of money. Eating out can be expensive in London – so instead use the kitchen to cook your own meals and use the money on activities instead.

Book transport online

UK rail services are famously super expensive. Avoid paying crazy amounts by looking for deals online, or travel in groups to get saver deals. Weekend tourist passes can be cheaper.

Get city passes

You can get great deals on sightseeing activities in most UK cities. Getting a pass gives you discounts on entry and sometimes free travel. Check online or ask at your hostel/hotel.

Couchsurf or house-sit

If costs are mounting – why not look into Couchsurfing or options for house-sitting? It could help save you a lot of money on accommodation and you may find a friend/guide!
