19 Unique & Best Things To Do in Rotterdam
There are so many incredible things to do in Rotterdam, it can be challenging to plan your trip! If you're struggling to build an itinerary for your first trip, check out my Perfect 3 Day Rotterdam Itinerary For First-Timers for inspiration for your first visit to this amazing city. If you’re planning to explore Rotterdam in depth, the Rotterdam City Card is your best travel companion. It gives you free or discounted entry to many of the city’s top attractions — from museums like FENIX and the Kunsthal to the Euromast Tower — plus unlimited travel on public transport. With so much creativity and sustainability packed into every corner of the city, it’s the easiest (and most affordable) way to experience it all.
Here are some of the best and most unique things to do in Rotterdam — from bold architecture and world-first innovations to local markets, rooftop farms, and vibrant street art that tells the story of the city itself.

1. Visit FENIX – The Museum of Human Migration
FENIX is a bold new cultural icon. Housed in a renovated harbour warehouse in Katendrecht, it is one of Rotterdam’s most powerful museums — and the world’s first entirely dedicated to human migration. Through immersive art, film, and personal stories, it explores what it means to move, belong, and find home. The maze of 2,000 suitcases, each holding a real migration story, is deeply moving, while The Tornado — a twisting double-spiral staircase — offers both a symbolic and literal ascent, ending with sweeping views over the city. It’s a space that invites reflection and connection, reminding visitors that movement is at the heart of what it means to be human.
After your visit, take a moment to unwind at Fenix Food Factory, a local favourite for craft beer and small bites, or stop by Granucci Gelato for something sweet. Then, wander through Katendrecht and Kop van Zuid — vibrant districts where Rotterdam’s industrial past meets its creative present.

2. Explore Rotterdam’s Street Art with Inside Rotterdam
Rotterdam’s creativity doesn’t just live in its museums — it’s splashed across walls, bridges, and alleyways throughout the city. Joining a Street Art Tour with Inside Rotterdam is one of the best ways to understand this side of the city. It’s not just about seeing colourful murals; it’s about hearing the stories behind them — tales of resilience, identity, and hope. One of the most striking pieces you’ll encounter is “Brightness Through the Clouds of Cancer” by Judith de Leeuw (JDL), located near FENIX. It’s a breathtaking mural that captures emotion, strength, and light in the face of adversity — and perfectly bridges the themes of migration, struggle, and humanity explored at the museum.
Inside Rotterdam’s local guides bring incredible insight and energy to the experience, introducing you to both world-famous artists and hidden gems that even locals might miss. You can even visit DakAkker, Europe’s largest rooftop farm, where vegetables and herbs grow between beehives and solar panels high above the city streets. If you’re keen to explore more, Inside Rotterdam also offers food, architecture, harbour, and “Wilde Westen” bike tours, plus self-guided routes for those who prefer to wander at their own pace — each one offering a new way to experience Rotterdam’s creative, ever-evolving character.

3. Tour the Fascinating Floating Farm
One of the most fascinating and forward-thinking places to visit in Rotterdam is the Floating Farm — the world’s first working dairy farm on water. Located in the innovative M4H (Merwe-Vierhavens) district, this floating structure is more than just a local curiosity; it’s a glimpse into the future of sustainable food production.
The concept is rooted in circular farming — where nothing goes to waste. The cows live on a multi-level barge, their feed comes from leftover food waste collected from nearby businesses, and their milk is processed and sold locally, drastically cutting down on transport emissions. Even the cows’ manure and urine are recycled, helping to purify water and create plant pots used in the farm’s own vertical growing systems.
You can pre-book a private tour that includes a presentation, guided visit, and tasting session (for up to 10 people, €100 total). Alternatively, if you’d rather explore independently, the farm is free to visit, and you can wander around at your own pace before stopping by the Floating Farm shop for locally made dairy products and sustainable souvenirs.

4. A Brewery Tour at Stadshaven Brouwerij
Just a short stroll from the Floating Farm, you’ll find Stadshaven Brouwerij — the second-largest independent craft brewery in the Netherlands and a must-visit for anyone who loves craft beer, sustainability, or clever urban design. Located in the Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) district, this vast, light-filled space was once a fruit warehouse. Today, it’s been transformed into a buzzing brewery that perfectly reflects Rotterdam’s knack for reimagining its industrial past.
What makes Stadshaven Brouwerij stand out isn’t just the beer — it’s the innovation behind it. The team here brews Rotterdam’s most sustainable beers, using cutting-edge technology to minimise energy and water waste, repurpose heat, and recycle ingredients wherever possible. Their goal is to brew high-quality beer with a minimal footprint — and you can really taste the care that goes into every pint.
Stop in for one of their signature brews — I highly recommend Devil’s Fruit, a bold and fruity beer that quickly became one of my favourites. If you have time, book a brewery tour to learn more about their sustainable brewing process and sample a few of their most innovative creations.

5. Go Vintage Shopping in Zwaanshalskwartier
From the bustling brewery scene of M4H, make your way to Zwaanshalskwartier, one of Rotterdam’s best-kept secrets. This neighbourhood feels like a small creative village tucked within the city — full of charm, character, and community spirit. Here, you’ll find independent boutiques, art galleries, vintage stores, and concept shops, all run by passionate local entrepreneurs who care deeply about sustainability and design. If you're interested in preloved clothes, check out my Rotterdam vintage shopping guide for the best shops across the city.
I could’ve easily spent hours here — flicking through old vinyl records, admiring hand-thrown ceramics, and trying on preloved fashion finds that tell their own stories. Every shop has its own personality, and the people behind the counters are always happy to chat or share a local tip. It’s one of those places that instantly makes you feel at home, especially if you’re travelling solo — safe, walkable, and full of friendly faces.
Between shops, stop for coffee or brunch at one of the area’s artisan cafés. Jordy’s Bakery is a must-visit — not just because their sourdough pastries are delicious, but also because they supply the baked goods for The Usual Hotel, tying together two of my favourite local spots. After exploring the shops, take a leisurely stroll along the river, where you’ll find even more creative corners, murals, and hidden cafés overlooking the water. Zwaanshalskwartier perfectly captures the essence of Rotterdam — a city that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and community in every form.

6. Visit the Harvest Market – Rotterdamse Oogst Markt
If you want to experience Rotterdam like a local, start your Saturday morning at the Oogst Markt — the city’s beloved farmers’ “harvest” market held every weekend at Noordplein. This isn’t your average market; it’s a genuine community gathering that celebrates sustainability and high-quality local produce. The market was founded by Gerda Zijlstra, a local legend who saw a gap in the city’s food scene for accessible, locally grown produce. What began as a series of small food festivals has now become one of Rotterdam’s most-loved traditions — a weekly celebration of slow living and good food.
Wander through stalls overflowing with organic vegetables, homemade cheeses, freshly baked bread, vegan treats, artisanal pastries, and fragrant spices. One of my favourite parts? Sampling new flavours from small-batch makers — from tangy kombucha to handmade Indian pickles that pack a punch. Grab a coffee from a local roaster (you’ll often find Gerda herself near the coffee stall) and take your time soaking up the atmosphere. The vibe is friendly and down-to-earth, and everyone — from the farmers to the bakers — is proud to share the story behind their produce. It’s the perfect way to start your day before exploring nearby Zwaanshalskwartier, and a reminder of what makes Rotterdam’s food scene so special: a deep respect for local makers, mindful eating, and community spirit.

7. Cruise Across the Maas River by Watertaxi
It’s time for one of Rotterdam’s most unique experiences: the Watertaxi. These sleek black-and-yellow boats are part of the city’s public transport system but feel more like a mini adventure than a commute. Step aboard and hold on tight — they move fast! Cruising along the Maas River, you’ll see Rotterdam from a whole new perspective. As the boat zips past the Erasmus Bridge, with its dramatic white lines cutting across the skyline, you’ll understand why locals are so proud of their city’s architecture. The views are incredible — the blend of futuristic high-rises, bold design, and working harbour create a skyline that’s unlike anywhere else in Europe.
One of the locals I met told me this was her favourite thing to do in Rotterdam, and I completely understand why. Whether you’re crossing from the city centre to the creative docks of Katendrecht or just hopping between riverside neighbourhoods, it’s the perfect way to get a feel for the city’s modern, water-loving soul. It’s practical, affordable (fares start around €4–€10 depending on distance), and a thrill every time — part transport, part sightseeing tour, and entirely unforgettable.

8. Enjoy Free Art Exhibitions at Kunstavond
If you happen to be in Rotterdam on the first Friday of the month, don’t miss Kunstavond, a monthly art evening that brings the city’s creative energy to life. Every first Friday of the month, leading galleries and cultural hubs in the Witte de Withkwartier, like Kunstinstituut Melly, stay open late and offer free exhibitions, performances, and installations. During my visit, I was completely captivated by a live mixed-media performance that unfolded in one of the galleries — it felt like stepping into a living artwork. I also explored an exhibition that traced the history of the museum itself, giving me a sense of how Rotterdam’s art scene has evolved over the decades.
Kunstavond is more than just an evening of art; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant cultural community. You’ll encounter artists, performers, and fellow visitors all sharing the space, creating a lively, interactive atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to see Rotterdam’s contemporary creativity in action, all while discovering hidden corners of galleries and unexpected performances tucked throughout the district. Even if you’re not a traditional gallery-goer, Kunstavond is approachable, engaging, and a wonderful way to experience the heart of Rotterdam’s artistic spirit after dark. It’s also ideal to pair with dinner in the neighbourhood — the surrounding streets are full of inviting restaurants and cafés, making it a complete evening out.

9. Euromast Tower – Take in Panoramic Views of Rotterdam
No trip to Rotterdam is complete without visiting the Euromast Tower, the city’s iconic observation point. Standing 185 meters tall, it offers sweeping panoramic views over the Maas River, the skyline, and the bustling port below. I found it incredible to watch the city unfold beneath me — from the sleek lines of the Erasmus Bridge to the modern architecture scattered across the cityscape.
For thrill-seekers, the tower even offers abseiling experiences in the warmer months, adding a dash of adrenaline to your visit. The observation deck is perfect for photography, and going around sunset transforms the city into a canvas of golden light and reflective waterways. Whether you’re looking for a quiet moment to take in Rotterdam’s urban beauty or an adventurous perspective from above, the Euromast is a must-see landmark that gives a whole new appreciation for the city’s scale, design, and energy.

10. Explore the Iconic Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen)
Rotterdam’s Cube Houses are one of the city’s most photographed and talked-about architectural landmarks, and for good reason. Designed by Piet Blom in the 1970s, these tilted, bright yellow cubes sit atop hexagonal pylons and create a playful, almost surreal streetscape that feels like stepping into a modern art installation. The idea behind the design was to create a “forest of cubes,” where each house represents a tree, giving a dynamic sense of community and creativity.
You can wander around the exterior to admire the quirky angles and colourful facades, but for a deeper experience, visit the Show Cube Museum to see the interior of one of the homes. Walking through the cube, you get a sense of how the architect cleverly maximised space despite the unconventional shape — it’s fascinating to see how everyday living adapts to such bold design.
The area around the Cube Houses is also worth exploring. You’ll find small cafés, local shops, and the Nieuwe Binnenweg for independent boutiques. It’s a perfect spot to wander, take photos, and soak up Rotterdam’s playful, experimental vibe — a reminder that this city isn’t afraid to rethink the ordinary. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, a solo traveller looking for a fun walk, or just someone who enjoys unusual urban landscapes, the Cube Houses are a must-see Rotterdam experience.

12. Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – Art & Architecture Combined
Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is far from your typical museum — it’s a bold, futuristic blend of art, architecture, and transparency. Rather than hiding its treasures, the Depot showcases them, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how a major art collection is stored and cared for. Home to over 150,000 artworks, the building sits next to Museumpark and was designed by the renowned architects MVRDV, featuring a striking mirrored façade that reflects the city and sky.
Inside, climate-controlled storage compartments, open display spaces, and a rooftop garden make it feel like part museum, part observatory. You can wander among paintings, sculptures, and prints while seeing the curatorial and preservation processes in action — it’s both educational and visually stunning. The combination of innovative architecture, public accessibility, and world-class art makes Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen one of the most fascinating cultural experiences in Rotterdam, and a must-visit for anyone who loves design as much as they love art.

Don't miss an unforgettable dining experience at Restaurant Rotonde, a place that perfectly captures the city’s sustainable and creative spirit. This Green Michelin Star restaurant showcases how plant-forward, locally sourced cuisine can be both imaginative and delicious. The menu changes frequently, reflecting what’s seasonal and fresh, and every dish is designed to highlight the incredible flavors of local vegetables.
The open kitchen adds an extra layer of excitement — you can watch the chefs at work, transforming simple ingredients into culinary art. Expect playful and unexpected combinations, like blueberry, basil, and onion, that somehow work in perfect harmony. Each plate tells a story of sustainability and innovation, and the thoughtfully paired natural wines complete the experience. Dining here is not just about food; it’s about understanding the care, creativity, and environmental consciousness that goes into every choice — a perfect way to cap off your first day exploring Rotterdam.

16. Explore Hoge Square & Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk
Step into Rotterdam’s deep-rooted history at Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, the city’s oldest church and one of the few buildings to survive the devastating WWII bombings that flattened much of central Rotterdam. Its Gothic architecture, intricate stone carvings, and soaring stained-glass windows offer a striking contrast to the city’s modern skyline.
Surrounding Hoge Square (Grotekerkplein), you’ll find charming cobbled streets and quiet alleys lined with cafés, boutique shops, and remnants of old Rotterdam. Walking here feels like traveling back in time — a peaceful pause that lets you imagine life in Rotterdam centuries ago, before the city’s dramatic post-war reconstruction.

17. Stroll Through Delfshaven's Wartime Past
Delfshaven is a living window into Rotterdam’s past. This historic district miraculously escaped the WWII bombings that flattened the city, preserving quaint canals, centuries-old warehouses, and classic Dutch façades. Meandering through its canals, historic warehouses, and classic Dutch façades, you’ll feel transported to a quieter, bygone era. Quaint cafés, artisan shops, and waterside benches make it a perfect spot to linger, sip a coffee, and soak in the atmosphere.
This district offers a fascinating glimpse into Rotterdam’s maritime heritage and wartime history, while the juxtaposition of historic streets against the city’s modern architecture provides a uniquely scenic experience. It’s a contrast to the city’s contemporary architecture, providing a serene, picturesque escape while offering a tangible sense of Rotterdam’s maritime and wartime history.
18. Find Hidden Statues & Street Sculptures
Rotterdam is full of surprises for those willing to explore off the beaten path. Wander down side streets, peek into courtyards, and you’ll discover a playful mix of hidden sculptures, quirky statues, and bold street art.
From monumental works to cheeky and provocative pieces — like the infamous “Buttplug Gnome” tucked in Witte de Withstraat — each installation tells a story or sparks a conversation. This city treats public art as a living, interactive experience rather than something confined to galleries, so slow walking and open eyes will reward you with unexpected delights around nearly every corner.

19. Gorge yourself at Markthal
The Markthal is one of Rotterdam’s most iconic buildings — a vibrant indoor market that’s as visually impressive as it is delicious. The horseshoe-shaped structure houses dozens of stalls offering fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, vegan treats, and international cuisine.
Above, a massive, colourful ceiling mural depicting fruits, vegetables, and flowers adds a surreal, almost otherworldly feel to your visit. The market is perfect for wandering, tasting, and photographing, and it embodies the city’s energy, creativity, and culinary diversity all in one space. Whether you’re sampling local delicacies, picking up a souvenir, or simply soaking in the lively atmosphere, Markthal is a must-visit on any Rotterdam itinerary.
