3 Tips for Choosing Accommodation in Kotor, Montenegro

Before you book your hotel or apartment in Kotor, here's a few hot tips for making sure you get the most from your stay:

  1. CRUISE SHIPS – Kotor is a stop for many cruise ships, sometimes multiple per day! So from 9am to 5pm, the Old Town is packed full of visitors from the cruise ships. Personally I recommend staying outside of the Old Town so you can avoid these peak times and wander in either early morning or after the ships depart.
  2. BEACHES – Kotor only has pebble beaches. If you're at the beaches, you'll likely be paying for use of a beach club or sunbeds for the sake of comfort which is absolutely fine, but it is great to also stay somewhere with access to a swimming pool.
  3. SUNSET VIEWS – Make sure you check whether your accommodation has either a balcony at the room, or access to a terrace and check photos of the view to see where the sun sets. Kotor is a lovely Old Town, but within it there isn't much of a sunset view so it's nice to be able to enjoy this from your place.

The Best Place to Stay in Kotor, Montenegro

If you're planning a stay in Montenegro – Kotor has some fabulous hotels and accommodations. I love to find independently-run apartments or boutique stays when I travel with my partner, so in Montenegro I found this amazing apartment which was located just outside the Old Town. As I mentioned above, if you're visiting the Bay of Kotor, it's worth knowing that it is a popular stop for cruise ships and choosing a hotel or apartment that offers a refuge from the midday sun and the busy streets during the days.

I stayed at Apartments Dončić – a family run business with a set of apartments overlooking the Adriatic Sea in a quiet area called Muo. It's just 25m from a pebbly beach and a 700m from the Old Town, with a 30 minute walk along the waterfront to one of the nicest beaches & beach clubs. Most importantly – I chose this apartment because it came with swimming pool access on a rooftop terrace which overlooks the sea and mountains as they glisten in the sunlight. Our room also came with:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • A fully equipped kitchenette
  • Air conditioning
  • Private Bathroom
  • Free Private Parking
  • Garden access
  • BBQ facilities

The apartment was also only 200m from the grocery shop which we used often to pick up fresh fruit and bread, and there are coffee shops just a short walk away. It was the perfect balance of close enough to walk to everything, but also in a quiet area we could escape to from Kotor Old Town when it became busy.

How to save money on booking this apartment

Hot tip – I actually managed to save over £400 GBP on a stay at Apartments Dončić and here's how I managed to do it:

  • I'm a Genius Level 3 member on Booking.com which means I receive discounts of 10-20% on properties when I travel – you reach this level by repeatedly booking accommodation through Booking.com
  • I also received a free upgrade through this programme which meant a more expensive room at the same discounted rate
